eSIM
eSIM, short for "embedded SIM card," mainly achieves the virtualization effect of the "card" by embedding the card into the phone's internal circuit board. Therefore, eSIM is also known as a virtual SIM card or digital SIM.
In terms of usage, unlike traditional SIM cards that require manual card replacement using a SIM removal pin, the eSIM is pre-embedded in the device, making the phone like a digital pass with the chip already implanted. You only need to scan the QR code provided after purchasing the SIM card to quickly activate overseas network functions, eliminating the complicated process of inserting the card.
EID (eUICC Identifier)
EID (eUICC Identifier) is the globally unique identifier for the eUICC chip (similar to the MAC address of a network card). When issuing a profile, operators may verify whether the EID is on the whitelist(For example, some operators in the US and Japan.) If EID is not supported, you cannot download the Profile. eSTK.me's "virtual EID" feature can only trick the app and cannot fool the ISP's server.
Why can't we "truly forge" success?
When you try to download or activate an eSIM Profile on your phone, the operator's SM-DP+ server (secure routing server) doesn't just look at your EID string, but performs rigorous security certificate compliance verification:
• Asymmetric encryption verification: Each compliant eUICC (eSIM chip) is manufactured at the factory,The internal hardware security chip (SE) already contains a unique device private key and certificate issued by the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) root certificate。 • Two-way handshake: During the eSIM download process, the server challenges the chip by requiring it to sign with its built-in private key. • No cross-chip replication: Because you cannot extract the private key from a compliant genuine eSIM chip, even if you change the EID on other devices to match the real one, without the corresponding private key, it will never pass the SM-DP+ server's certificate verification, ultimately causing the profile download to fail.
eUICC white card
The SIM card we use daily is officially called a UICC card (Universal Integrated Circuit Card). eUICC stands for Embedded UICC, which is more like a chip. Normally, manufacturers solder the device directly onto the circuit board when manufacturing eSIM support and cannot be removed.
In recent years, a very popular eUICC card in China called 5ber has been created. 5ber and its predecessors eSIM.me pioneered a new way to support eSIM. They created a white eUICC card that is exactly the same shape and size as a regular SIM card and can be directly inserted into Chinese phones. Both manufacturers provide apps that allow users to download eSIM cards purchased online onto the physical eUICC card and use it normally.
Common products
SyCard Technology (SYC) Provides eUICC white cards of different capacities, which must be used with a card reader.
420 KB version: about ¥55, can store 10-20 profiles. 1 MB version: about ¥68, can store 30-50 profiles. Peripheral hardware: Provides USB-C eUICC card readers and various adapter boards. Limitations: Cannot be managed directly on the Chinese iPhone (iOS restrictions); requires an Android phone or computer card reader.
eSTK.me More powerful programmable eSIM cards.
Peculiarity: iOS Support: By simulating the STK menu, you can directly switch profiles on iOS devices, and even download profiles (v2.x firmware or above) via BIP protocol networking. Advanced features: supports custom EID (virtual EID), custom ARA-M (allows third-party app management), ATR settings, and more. Products: eSTKme-ECO, etc.
Lenovo (Thales/Gemalto) Lenovo's ThinkPad accessories are essentially standard eUICC white cards.
Source: Lenovo Overseas Official Website Exclusive. Specifications: The Thales version has a capacity of approximately 516 KiB, compliant with the SGP.22 v2.2 standard. Features: Standard industrial-grade product with no additional ARA-M settings, can only be managed via standard LPA (such as Windows built-in or open-source LPA).
5ber.eSIM / eSIM.me / 9eSIM These brands offer companion Android apps to manage the cards.
5ber.eSIM / eSIM.me: Provides a physical card, which, combined with the company's app, can write profiles to Android phones without built-in eSIM chips. 9eSIM (9ber): Early as a simple white card, later versions added app support. Note: Some products may have write count limits or device binding restrictions.
LPA(Local Profile Assistant)
LPA (Local Profile Assistant) is the core software component running on terminal devices in the GSMA Remote SIM Configuration (RSP) specification. It acts as a bridge between the eUICC chip (i.e., eSIM hardware) within the terminal and the cloud SM-DP+ server (subscription manager data preparation terminal).
eSIM Profile is written to the eUICC card
Usually obtained by purchasing an eSIM plan, the format is either a QR code or an activation code string. Standard activation code format:LPA:1${SM-DP+_ADDRESS}${MATCHING_ID}
SM-DP+_ADDRESS is a domain name, and MATCHING_ID is an ID identifier. After scanning the code, the phone will bring the MATCHING_ID to the server hosting SM-DP+_ADDRESS to download the corresponding profile file and write it into eUICC.
