ISO 3166 is a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines the name codes of countries, dependent territories, special geographical areas, and their main administrative divisions, such as provinces or states. The official name of this standard is "Names of Countries and Their Administrative Divisions Representation Codes".
ISO 3166 is intended to define internationally recognized alphabetical and/or numeric codes for our use when referring to countries and their subordinate administrative regions. However, it does not define the names of countries – this information comes from United Nations sources ("country names" in the Glossary of Terms and "country codes for statistical use" maintained by the United Nations Statistics Division).
Using codes saves time and avoids errors, since instead of using the name of a country that is understood around the world, we can use a combination of letters and/or numbers that we can understand all over the world, which changes depending on the language used.
For example, all national postal organizations around the world use containers labeled with the corresponding country code to exchange international mail. The Internet Domain Name System uses these codes to define top-level domains, such as ".fr" for France and ".au" for Australia. In addition, in machine-readable passports, these codes are used to determine the nationality of the user; When we send money from one bank to another, the country code is a way to identify the location of the bank.
ISO 3166 is a country code standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that includes:
ISO 3166-1 alpha-2: two-letter codes (e.g. CN, US, JP) ISO 3166-1 alpha-3: Three-letter codes (e.g. CHN, USA, JPN) ISO 3166-1 numeric: numeric codes (e.g. 156, 840)
