Eclipse is an open-source, Java-based, and scalable development platform. By itself, it is simply a framework and a set of services for building development environments with plugin components. Fortunately, Eclipse comes with a standard set of plugins, including Java Development Kit (JDK). In fact, there are many more Java development tools:
JCreator: An entry-level development tool
Eclipse: Open source, powerful, widely used, many plugins, easy to use
IntelliJ: Claimed to be the smartest Java development tool, not open source, you have to pay for a license, but there is a cracked version
NetBeans: Sun's development tools are advantageous for mobile and desktop development
JDeveloper: Oracle made it, it is not used much, it is not easy to use
JBuilder: IBM made it, but it doesn't work anymore, it uses Eclipse.
