Following the announcement of a sky-high transaction volume of 57.1 billion yuan, Alibaba Group disclosed a series of technical indicators behind this year's Double 11 on the 12th: the order creation capacity reached a maximum of 80,000 transactions per second, and Alipay's payment peak exceeded 2.85 million transactions per minute, setting a new world record; 96% of the Double 11 orders are completed by the Alibaba Cloud Jushi Tower platform, without any failures or missed orders. Tmall Double 11 Online Shopping Carnival once again set a series of world records: a total transaction volume of 57.1 billion yuan in a single day, generating 278 million logistics orders, and a total of 217 countries and regions were lit up; Alibaba's mobile transactions exceeded 100 million in 75 seconds, reaching 24.3 billion throughout the day, setting a new high for global mobile e-commerce transactions, and Alipay had 197 million mobile payment transactions in a single day, a year-on-year increase of 336%.
Daniel Zhang, COO of Alibaba Group, commented: Alibaba is a technology platform, and our biggest concern is whether it can withstand the huge influx of people at the beginning of Double 11 every year. This year, our technical team set a new record, supporting 70,000 instantaneous order creations per second after zero, which I believe is a world record that no other company can do at the moment. After our Double 11 practical exercises in the first five years and even the sixth year of this year, we are able to support this high-traffic high-concurrency real-time transaction.
In this extreme high-concurrency transaction scenario, Alibaba has also overcome another technical problem this year's Double 11: if there are only 1,000 pieces of a certain product, and 50,000 people come to grab it at the same moment, the system can not oversell and prevent merchants from suffering losses due to selling 1,001 pieces.
Liu Zhenfei, vice president of Alibaba Group, said that cloud computing has played a very important fundamental role in this year's Double 11. The big data processing of Tmall, Taobao, and Alipay is all completed based on the big data processing platform ODPS of Alibaba Cloud computing, which provides technical support for the personalized recommendation of Tmall Double 11, which is a great improvement in independent research and development capabilities. Alibaba Cloud ODPS can process 100PB of data in 6 hours, which is equivalent to 100 million high-definition movies.
Alibaba Cloud Computing is Alibaba's core technology platform, which can connect 5,000 computers and even off-site data centers together and work like a "supercomputer". Cloud computing can easily achieve elastic expansion, handle access requests with large traffic in a short period of time, and complete the processing and analysis of massive data.
Since 2012, Alibaba Cloud has gradually played an increasingly important role in Double 11. On Double 11 this year, Alibaba Cloud began to accelerate the export of cloud computing and big data processing capabilities to Alibaba's e-commerce ecosystem to help merchants cope with the impact of large orders brought about by Double 11. The Jushi Tower built on Alibaba Cloud is a cloud work platform used by almost all sellers on Tmall and Taobao. On Double 11 in 2013, 75% of the orders were processed on the Jushi Tower, and none of the orders were lost, and this year this proportion has further increased to 96%.

In the early morning of November 11, 2014, Alipay also ushered in the transaction peak of this year's Double 11, with the peak of payments per minute exceeding 2.85 million, compared with the peak of 790,000 transactions per minute during Double 11 last year, and the system support capacity reached more than three times that of last year. Under such peak pressure, Alipay's payment experience has still improved a lot compared with last year.
Cheng Li, CTO of Ant Financial Services Group, introduced that Alipay's technological progress is also supported by cloud computing architecture. After several years of upgrading, Alipay's new "cloud payment" architecture has been capped this year, helping the "Double Eleven" for the first time. The "cloud payment" architecture is switched from the original IOE technology to cloud computing technology, which can support more than one billion ultra-large daily payment processing capabilities, and Yuebao is completely built on the Alibaba cloud computing platform. Under the "cloud payment" architecture, the intelligent scheduling system can make decisions within seconds based on the processing capacity and health of each payment channel.
Liu Zhenfei also revealed that in the early morning of this year's "Double Eleven", Alipay cut the core database traffic into Alibaba's self-developed financial cloud database OceanBase for the first time. "After the test in the early hours of this morning, we are now very confident that we will put all Alipay transactions on this platform in the future and completely replace the technology of foreign manufacturers." It is reported that there are only a handful of companies in the world with database research and development capabilities, and the application of cloud databases in core financial businesses with the highest stability requirements is a world-class technical problem.
"Change the engine for a flying plane"
Based on long-term technology accumulation in the field of cloud computing, Alibaba's technical team has also overcome two other world-class innovation problems before this year's Double 11 - "flexible deployment of server resources" and "data center off-site active activity". The flexible deployment of server resources can cope with unpredictable business outbreaks. Once a service hotspot appears that exceeds expectations, the system can automatically call other servers with insufficient resources to achieve "seamless switching in minutes" and respond to more complex traffic changes without increasing hardware deployment.
"Data center off-site active activity" can help Alibaba cope with extreme natural disasters, even if the data center in Hangzhou is "wiped out", Double 11 can still operate smoothly. This technology enables data centers in two places across provinces to work as one data center, and supports all applications of Double 11 at the same time. "The switchover of the data centers in the two places can be done without interrupting the business, which is like changing the engine of a flying plane, not only without affecting the flight, but also without the passengers on the plane." ”
It is reported that only Alibaba has completed the deployment of the data center of the super-large e-commerce website, and other e-commerce giants including Amazon have not achieved it.
