Long story short: now that Docker is based on YY.MM (like Ubuntu), users can choose between Stable (slower release) or Edge (faster release) version.

Docker Engine changed to Docker CE (Community Edition)
It includes a CLI client, background processes/services, and APIs. Users get it the same way as before.
Docker Data Center changed to Docker EE (Enterprise Edition)
Additional payment products and support are added to the three pricing tiers of Docker
These changes do not affect Docker Compose or Docker Machine
The Docker version is now based on YY.MM
With month-based releases, the first version of 17.03 will point to 17.03.0, if there are bugs/security fixes that need to be released, then it will point to 17.03.1, etc.
Two versions of "Edge" and "Stable" were released
Edge releases are released monthly with one month of support.
The Stable version is released quarterly and comes with 4 months of support.
You can subscribe to Docker EE for extended Stable version support and patch fixes.
