Software version cycle
α, β, and λ are commonly used to represent the three stages of the software testing process.
-- α is the first phase and is generally for internal testing only;
-- β is the second stage, which has eliminated most of the imperfections in the software, but there may still be defects and vulnerabilities, and it is generally only provided to a specific user group for testing and use.
-- λ is the third stage, at this time the product is quite mature, and it only needs to be further optimized in individual places to be listed and issued.
Development period
-- Alpha(α): Preview, or internal beta; Generally, if it is not released to the outside world, there will be many bugs; Generally only used by testers.
-- Beta(β): beta version, or public beta; New features will be added all the time in this phase; Launched after alpha.
-- RC(Release Candidate): Final test version; It may become a final product release candidate, and if there are no issues, it can be released as an official version
Most open source software will release two RC versions, and the final RC2 will be the official version.
Completion period
-- Stable: stable version; Corrections have been made from the release of the preview version and improvements.
-- GA(General Availability): The official release version; In foreign countries, GA is used to describe the release version.
-- RTM(Release to Manufacturing): the release version to the manufacturer; The RTM version does not necessarily mean that the creator solves all the problems with the software; It is still possible to update the version before it is released to the public.
Another type of RTM is RTW (Release To Web), which means that the official version of the software is released to the website for customers to download for free.
-- RTL(Retail): Retail version; It is a real official version, officially launched on the retail version.
Taking Windows 7 as an example, the RTM version has the same version number as the retail version.
Other expressions
-- OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): Original Equipment Manufacturer; It is sold to computer manufacturers with computers, that is, random versions;
It can only be shipped by random machines, not retail. It can only be installed clean, not upgraded from the old operating system. The packaging is not as beautiful as the retail version, usually only a CD and instructions (power of attorney).
-- RVL: It is claimed to be the official version, but RVL is not the name of the version at all. It is cracked from the Chinese/English version of the documentation.
-- EVAL: The EVAL version circulating on the network is similar to the "evaluation version" and is functionally no different from the retail version. |
