After returning from vacation, I was busy for a while, and when it was time to spend money at the end of the year, the money that could not be spent on the project every year needed to be returned. This year we are going to purchase storage servers, we have already interviewed several suppliers, Dell has responded the most positively, and even provided free equipment for us to test for two months, and now we can't decide whether to buy professional storage or buy ordinary servers to do our own storage clusters.
From our environment and experience, hard disks are one of the most easily broken server components, and hard drives are scrapped every year. We know that the hard drive will break sooner or later, so the necessary redundancy and backup are indispensable, data reliability is far more important than the reliability of the hard disk, since humans cannot stop the hard disk from being scrapped, then we can only find ways to avoid data loss.
Backblaze released theirs last monthHard Drive Reliability Update – Sep 2014They have 34,881 hard disks, more than 100 petabytes of data, and the statistical sample is large enough, and the data and conclusions are worth our reference.
