Internet Identification Autonomous System (ASN)
An autonomous system or autonomous system (AS) refers to the combination of all IP networks and routers under the jurisdiction of one or more entities on the Internet that enforce a common routing policy to the Internet. See the updated definition in RFC 1930.
Initially, autonomous systems were required to be governed by a single entity, usually an Internet Service Provider or a large organization with independent connections to multiple networks, following a single and well-defined routing policy, see RFC 1771 and the initial definition of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) (now deprecated). Because multiple organizations can use their own autonomous system numbers to run the BGP protocol between the ISPs that connect them to the Internet, the newer definition in RFC 1930 is more commonly used. Although the ISP supports these autonomous systems, the Internet can only see the ISP's routing policy. Therefore, ISPs must have a publicly and officially registered Autonomous System Number (ASN).
Each autonomous system used for BGP routing is assigned a unique autonomous system number (ASN). For BGP, this autonomous system number is important because the ASN is the unique identifier that distinguishes the networks across the entire interconnected network. Internet address distribution agencies reserve ASN numbers 64512 to 65535 for use on (private) private networks.
